Vegan Diets for Pets
Can my dog or cat be vegan?
This is a question you'll have to answer for yourself. Many say yes, some say no. Most frequently you'll see that cats need 70% of their diet to be protein and therefore have a larger requirement for animal flesh. You'll find other sites that say their cat has been vegan and healthy for some time. Dogs, it seems, need only about 30% of their diet to be protein and many claim their dogs live happy, healthy and extended lives on a vegan diet. I've been converting Brooks to a vegan diet very slowly over four months now. He's 80% vegan, I make his food and use a high quality vegan kibble. He's as healthy as ever, still running about 20 miles a few times a week. His coat is softer than ever (he loves oils), his eyes are bright and is as keen as ever.

I am sure you will find that with a little effort you can help your dog or cat transition to a vegan or at least mostly vegan diet."

One remarkable example is that of Bramble, a 27-year-old border collie whose vegan diet of rice, lentils, and organic vegetables earned her consideration by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's oldest living dog in 2002. Studies have shown that the ailments associated with meat consumption in humans, such as allergies, cancer, and kidney, heart, and bone problems, also affect many nonhumans. Pet food has also been recalled during mad cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), scares because of the risk that contaminated meat was processed into the food. One deputy commissioner states that cats especially "are susceptible to BSE." More…
