Animal rights, also known as animal liberation, is the idea that the most basic interests of non-human animals should be given the same consideration as the similar interests of human beings.

Advocates approach the issue from different philosophical positions, ranging from the protectionist side of the movement, presented by philosopher Peter Singer—with a utilitarian focus on suffering and consequences, rather than just on the concept of rights—to the abolitionist side, represented by law professor Gary Francione, who argues that animals need only one right: the right not to be property.

Despite the different approaches, advocates broadly agree that animals should be viewed as non-human persons and members of the moral community, and should not be used as food, clothing, research subjects, or entertainment. —Wikipedia

    Animal Ark, North of Reno.
The mission of Animal Ark is to inspire environmental stewardship through wildlife education.

Since 1981, Animal Ark has provided a safe haven for injured, abandoned and otherwise non-releasable wildlife.

Animal Ark is located north of Reno on thirty-eight acres and primarily features native North American predators, though a few exotic species have found a home there. Animal Ark educates tens of thousands of children and adults a year about ecological principles and wildlife by providing special programming events and educational tours.

Animal Ark's philosophy is that each animal taken in is provided a home for life. Animal Ark does not engage in captive breeding for the purposes of selling or trading of animals. It is our belief that wild animals belong in the wild and for those animals that are not capable of surviving in the wild on their own, they have the power to represent their wild cousins and educate people about the importance environmental stewardship.

    US Wolf Refuge
The U.S. WOLF REFUGE is in existence to promote and protect the welfare of all wolves and wolf dogs throughout North America. Our overall goals are to return the wolf to its rightful place within our ecology and to promote healthy and harmonious relations between man and wolf dogs.

    IDEOLOGY

Virtually all of the recent tragic incidents involving wolves and wolf dogs have been a direct result of humans ineffectively dealing with them. If wolf and wolf dog behavior is understood and properly dealt with, man's relationship with them will be happy and harmonious. The UNITED STATES WOLF REFUGE is dedicated to this belief.

This is a needed function due to man's differing opinions toward the wolf. It is the belief of the U.S. WOLF REFUGE that wolves are wildlife and belong in the wild as is naturally intended. Those who oppose the mere existence of the wolf must understand that the wolf is an absolute necessity to the natural balance of any ecosystem. Those who revere the wolf and make it out to be something greater than it is must understand the same thing. The wolf is simply a piece in Mother Nature's delicate and complicated puzzle.

A rescued Chihuahua has been saved from possible euthanasia after being found as a stray. These tiny but mighty dogs may have been saved from an abusive or neglectful home. Often, these Chi's have been thrown away because the owner no longer wants to keep them. Infrequently, the dog can no longer be cared for by the owner or the owner is deceased
    Wild Animal Infirmary For Nevada
The Wild Animal Infirmary for Nevada (WAIF) is an IRS 501(3) tax-exempt, nonprofit, educational and charitable organization chartered in July of 1978 to care for ill, injured and orphaned wildlife. When the birds and animals have recovered, they are returned to the wild.

WAIF is operated by medically trained people. Veterinarians do the examinations, diagnoses and surgeries, and an M.D. Ophthalmologist treats eye problems. Nursing care of wildlife is done under the supervision of a registered nurse and the Infirmary is staffed with a few select volunteers.

WAIF is located at a home with an attached two-car garage which has been converted to a lovely and convenient acute-care facility. In the room there are two banks of stainless-steel cages which were purchased through the matching of funds by WAIF with the Robert Z. Haw kins Foundation. The room has heat, lights, water and air conditioning. On an acre next to the hospital, there are large pens for wildlife needing outdoor exercise.

We admit many birds and animals each year and as we are medically trained folks, our release rate is exceptionally high. We receive compromised wildlife from the Nevada Division of Wildlife, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service, Audubon Society, all animal control agencies, Nevada Humane Society, police departments, sheriffs' departments, Nevada Highway Patrol, fire departments and the general populous.

    Hidden Valley Horse Protection Fund
The Wild Horses are icons of American Culture. They are symbols of freedom and are the elemental bridge between the ancient rhythms of nature and the contemporary human being. In today's world, we simply throw away our cars, toys, furniture, clothes, and yes, even our animals when we tire of them. No one is to blame. We just forgot what nature presented to us. As civilization closes in on them, the Wild Horses' struggle for survival intensifies. Our governments have turned their backs on the beautiful creatures and failed to execute their responsibilities for care.

The Hidden Valley Wild Horse Protection Fund is an all volunteer Nevada non-profit organization. It was organized in 2008 with the mission to protect and preserve the Wild Horses that settle during the winter months in the foothills surrounding Hidden Valley. For the past 19 years, volunteers have monitored herd health, grazing availability, provided attention to sick and injured horses and foals, aided in state run adoption processes, and installed and mended fencing and cattle guards. Other volunteers are involved in ensuring federal and state departments are working within the statutes that provide protection and care for the Wild Horses.

    Let 'Em Run
In the Nevada mountains know as the Virginia Range near the circa 1859 "Comstock Lode" gold and silver mining town of Virginia City, bands of wild horses still roam free. Approximately 700 of these estrays descended from domestic horses, Indian ponies and horses that pulled covered wagons across the prairie to the gold fields of Nevada and California have somehow managed to not only survive, but to flourish. They are as much a part of the culture in this tiny mountain community as the saloons and the mines and the stalwart people who live in this "island in the sky" once known as the "richest place on earth."

Trust your conscience - don't ignore that little voice that's telling you to do something.

    NoBearHuntNV.org
The impetus for forming our group was to oppose the first ever Nevada bear hunt. We believe Tahoe bears should be treated kindly by those of us who share their habitat. The bears are already under stress from habitat encroachment as we spread more and more into their native range. Easy food sources from mishandling trash have disrupted their natural behavior and created urban interface problems.

Statistical data shows this problem is being slowly and successfully dealt with due to greater public awareness.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals
The largest animal rights organization in the world, with more than 3 million members and supporters.

PETA focuses its attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: on factory farms, in the clothing trade, in laboratories, and in the entertainment industry. We also work on a variety of other issues, including the cruel killing of beavers, birds, and other "pests" as well as cruelty to domesticated animals.

    Mercy For Animals
is a national non-profit organization dedicated to preventing cruelty to farmed animals and promoting compassionate food choices and policies.

MFA believes Non-human animals are irreplaceable individuals with morally significant interests and hence rights. This includes the right to live free from unnecessary suffering and exploitation.

MFA is dedicated to establishing and defending the rights of all animals. Over 99% of cruelty to animals in the United States occurs at the hands of the meat, dairy, and egg industries - which confine, mutilate, and slaughter over 9 billion animals each year. As such, MFA primarily focuses on farmed animal advocacy and promoting cruelty-free food choices.

MFA works to be a voice for animals through proactive consumer education and advertising campaigns, research and undercover investigations, rescues, working with news media, and grassroots activism.

    Farm Sanctuary
Was founded in 1986 to combat the abuses of factory farming and encourage a new awareness and understanding about farm animals. Today, Farm Sanctuary is the nation's largest and most effective farm animal rescue and protection organization. We have rescued thousands of animals and cared for them at our sanctuaries in Watkins Glen, New York; Northern California (Orland); and the Los Angeles area. At Farm Sanctuary, these animals are our friends, not our food. We educate millions of people about their plight and the effects of factory farming on our health and environment. We advocate for laws and policies to prevent suffering and promote compassion, and we reach out to legislators and businesses to bring about institutional reforms.

Farm Sanctuary is committed to ending cruelty to farm animals and promoting compassionate living through rescue, education, and advocacy efforts. Please join us. A compassionate world begins with you!

SHARK: SHowing Animals Respect and Kindness SHARK

SHowing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK) was founded in 1993 by former hunter Steve Hindi. As a "sportsman," Steve hunted many species of animals both on land and in the sea. He killed for thirty years until the life-shattering day when, en route to shark hunting in the Atlantic Ocean, Steve attended the infamous Hegins pigeon shoot in Pennsylvania.

The slaughter of thousands of nonhuman victims, and the involvement of children in the horrific killings, was too much for Steve to tolerate. He vowed to stop pigeon shoots, and went on to dedicate his life to ending the abuse of all animals.

With a small core of volunteers, and a staff of three (two are part-time), SHARK battles tirelessly against bullfighting, pigeon shoots, turkey shoots, canned hunts (and all hunting), rodeos, circuses, zoos, and marine parks... any issue that involves violation of the innate rights of living creatures.

SHARK also conducts animal rescues and education projects.

    Non Human Rights Project
The Nonhuman Rights Project is the only organization working toward actual LEGAL rights for members of species other than our own. Our mission is to change the common law status of at least some nonhuman animals from mere "things," which lack the capacity to possess any legal right, to "persons," who possess such fundamental rights as bodily integrity and bodily liberty, and those other legal rights to which evolving standards of morality, scientific discovery, and human experience entitle them. Our first cases are being prepared for filing in 2013.

    Beagle Freedom Project
The Beagle Freedom Project is a mission to rescue beagles used in animal experimentation in research laboratories and give them a chance at life in a loving forever home.

    A Life Connected
We are connecters, consumer educators, reminders that we are all interconnected.

Our vision is a world driven by the innate goodness of people and their values of justice, kindness, and compassion for other people, for the planet, and for animals.

    We Animals
We Animals is an ambitious project which documents, through photography, animals in the human environment. Humans are as much animal as the sentient beings we use for food, clothing, research, experimentation, work, entertainment, slavery and companionship. With this as its premise, We Animals aims to break down the barriers that humans have built which allow us to treat non-human animals as objects and not as beings with moral significance. The objective is to photograph our interactions with animals in such a way that the viewer finds new significance in these ordinary, often unnoticed situations of use, abuse and sharing of spaces.

    Animal Rights: The Abolitionist Approach
The mission of this website is to provide a clear statement of an approach to animal rights that (1) promotes the abolition of animal exploitation and rejects the regulation of animal exploitation; (2) is based only on animal sentience and no other cognitive characteristic, (3) regards veganism as the moral baseline of the animal rights position; and (4) rejects all violence and promotes activism in the form of creative, non-violent vegan education.

    Project Coyote
Project Coyote promotes educated coexistence between people and coyotes; we do this by championing progressive management policies that reduce human-coyote conflict, supporting innovative scientific research, and by fostering respect for and understanding of America's native wild "song dog."

We believe coyotes are a vital component of rural and urban communities, deserving of respect for their adaptability, resilience, and intelligence. We aim to create a shift in attitudes toward coyotes and other native carnivores by replacing ignorance and fear with understanding and appreciation.

    Cloud Foundation
grew out of Ginger Kathrens' knowledge and fear for not only Cloud's herd but other wild horses in the West. "I began to realize that we were losing America's wild horses," Ginger says. "They are rounded up by the thousand, losing in an instant what they value most--freedom and family. I realized that even Cloud and his family were in danger."

"In Cloud's remote mountain wilderness we have a perfect opportunity to step back and watch nature call the shots. Predators and daunting weather are limiting the herd size—naturally," she states. "Yet, human over management is jeopardizing their future survival. We could lose Cloud and his herd forever, unless we're willing to stand up for them now."

The non- profit Cloud Foundation is dedicated to preventing the extinction of Cloud's herd through education, media events and programming, and public involvement. The Foundation is also determined to protect other wild horse herds on public lands, especially isolated herds with unique characteristics and historical significance.

Mexican Gray Wolves - Lobos of the Southwest

Editorial: Making War On Wolves, Chicago Tribune, 7/7/13.
Yellowstone National Park's best-known wolf, beloved by many tourists and valued by scientists who tracked its movements, was shot and killed Thursday outside the park's boundaries, Wyoming wildlife officials reported. The wolf, known as 832F to researchers, was the alpha female of the park's highly visible Lamar Canyon pack and had become so well known that some wildlife watchers referred to her as a "rock star." The animal had been a tourist favorite for most of the past six years. — The New York Times, Dec. 8, 2012

They're intelligent, majestic and, owing to the blood lust of Homo sapiens, never far from extinction. Yet to biologists and ecologists worldwide, the best case for saving wild wolves is their role as predator of some species and, paradoxically, shepherd to others: By stalking abundant elk, moose and other forest browsers, wolves unwittingly enhance the growth of crucial vegetation that gives foxes, beavers, songbirds, pronghorn antelopes and other critters a chance to survive. More…
