Humane Society of the United States endorses a Puppy Mill Free Reno/Sparks/Washoe

Nevada Humane Society is proud to endorse the effort to halt the retail sale of animals acquired from puppy mills in Reno. I have witnessed first-hand the devastation, horror, and abuse animals held in mill situations endure. This is not breeding it is manufacturing. It is dirty, it is grim and this practice of stores profiting from this malfeasance have no place in Washoe County — one of the most humane communities in America. By eliminating the revenue and outlets for perpetrators of this cruelty we can help end puppy mills and with one voice say, not in our town.

I wholeheartedly support this effort!

I hosted the very first animal welfare telethon in the United States and have done many since then so I speak with some foundation on issues affecting our friends who cannot speak for themselves.

This is important and cannot be ignored.

If we don't stand up and speak for them...no one will...

Now is the time!

As animals die everyday in the shelter, its time to stop the cyle of cruelty and overpopulation. Please adopt a shelter pet.

Northern Nevada Shiba Rescue (NNSR) is a non-profit, independent animal rescue group dedicated to rescuing and rehoming the Shiba Inu. We have been working with the Shiba Inu breed for over 15 years. We have been partners in rescuing this breed from backyard breeders and puppy mills. In 2009 NNSR teamed with Shibas 4 Life in shutting down one of the largest puppy mills in the Northwest. At the time of the incident, the owner had over 100 dogs of differing breeds and sizes. His method of feeding these dogs was to cut open a large bag of dog food and scatter it in the dirt. Only the strongest survived and were able to eat. Dogs were left in unclean kennels, chained up to trees and fence posts, and left in abandoned trailers. When we rescued the dogs they were terrified of human contact, missing limbs, ears, eyes and tails. And almost every dog that went to a rescue group required medical attention.

It is because of these conditions that some people feel is acceptable, "after all they are only dogs", that we PROUDLY SUPPORT a PUPPY MILL FREE RENO!

Please support your local rescue groups, Humane Society and SPCA in caring those who can't care themselves!

I am a resident and business owner in Incline Village/Washoe County. I fully support the work of Puppy Mill Free Reno. Puppy mills promote cruelty toward the defenseless, and future owners of the animals, with profit being the primary goal. There is no integrity and no humanity where puppy mills are concerned. I know that for a prosperous future, there can be no puppy mills. It is my hope that Washoe County will lead the charge in Nevada, setting the right example, and doing right by all beings. Thank you, Julie Hodges, Owner and Director Awareness Village.

I fully support the ban of puppy mills no matter where they are, it is a extremely cruel, sad and lonely life. I believe if you can abuse an animal, you can abuse a human. Get your pets from a shelter or reputable breeder. A good breeder cares for the total welfare of their animals and welcome you to their homes. Please do not give away your pet, always ask for a small fee to deter unscrupulous people using them as bait in training fighting dogs.

I had no idea how my life was about to change when I made a decision five years ago and began volunteering my time and lobbying at the state level for animal organizations in the Reno/Sparks area. What has been a most rewarding experience to me has also tugged at my heartstrings big time I had no idea these types of facilities and the people involved in them existed I am happy to contribute anything I can to encourage and be a part of the closure of these abusively heinous, cruel and neglectful facilities and make certain they never rear their ugly heads here again.

Foie Gras Free Reno believes the Truckee Meadows could be a cruelty-free zone for all animals: dogs, cats, rabbits and the ducks and geese subjected to immeasureable cruelty in the Foie Gras industry. Though there are no factory-farms in the area, the sale and post-production should follow the lead of California and be banished from one of the most animal-friendly landscapes in the country.

Amanda White

Please please end this barbaric practice!! So many animals are suffering at the hands of these monsters that run puppy mills. Backyard breeders are just as bad. It is NEVER safe to buy a puppy from a puppy store, and many online sites showing pictures of happy dogs in the home are fake. In reality the dogs are kept in small confining cages with wire floors and much worse. This needs to stop!!!

Caitlin Kroshus

This NEEDS to stop! There is no reason or excuse to have puppy mills in commission. They all need to be shut down. There are millions of AMAZING dogs and cats at shelters that need to be adopted. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE stop this horrible practice!!!!

"This is the most signficant humane thing that I have ever done in my life. I feel like I am doing something useful."

Her companion, Lily, was rescued from an Ohio puppy mill while still a puppy before she got into the distribution system. She found Lily on PetFinder.com while searching for a puppy. So don't buy the myth you can't get a puppy unless from a store. These two are living proof that compassion is the way to go.
