Pet store owners want charges dropped

Owners of a Reno puppy store facing felony animal abuse and practicing veterinary medicine without a license appeared in court Wednesday to answer those charges. Instead they asked the charges be dropped.

The owners of Puppies Plus are under indictment for not properly taking care of their animals. The two face multiple counts including practicing veterinary medicine without a license, and animal torture.

Store Agrees to Stop Selling Puppies

"There are so many animals in a puppy mill. Anywhere from a couple of dozen to perhaps even as many as a thousand. They are not going to be fed properly, they are not going to be groomed, they are not going to have oral hygiene care," said Howard.

This reality has forced Joe Young to make a change. He announced Wednesday that he has converted Pets R Us into a pet supply store instead of a pet store. "We'll carry pet foods, pet treats, organic food, toys and apparel for dogs and cats," said Young.

Pet Store Investigation Results Released

According to the report, Dr. Kostecki's medical records of the animals were often insufficient, medications stored and prescribed for the animals weren't well-marked and directions to the staff were incomplete.

The board also says the vet may have sacrificed fully caring for the puppies because of financial and profit considerations of the pet store.

Animal Control Looks To Update Codes

Animal Control is looking to change some of its codes that are nearly ten years old.

Specifically, besides exotic pets, they are also looking at puppy mills, pet shops and dangerous dog codes they want to update.

Reno City Council Takes Action on Several Topics

An amendment to Title 4 was unanimously approved, it suspends the acceptance of business license applications for pet stores that include the sale of dogs, cats and rabbits. The suspension allows City of Reno staff the time to work with Washoe County to establish new application requirements. The moratorium will last a maximum of 180 days.
