Ninety percent of the food ads on Saturday-morning television are for candy bars, sugary cereals, salty canned foods, fatty fast foods and chips, and other nutritionally flawed foods... East West Magazine December 1991, p. 22 Ninety percent of the food ads on Saturday-morning television are for candy bars, sugary cereals, salty canned foods, fatty fast foods and chips, and other nutritionally flawed foods, according to a survey conducted by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit consumer advocacy group. Broadcasts were analyzed on five television stations, including affiliates of the ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox networks, plus the Nickelodeon cable channel. Except for one Kellogg breakfast ad, no ad or public service announcement recommended that children consume less fat or sugar, or substitute more fruits, vegetables, or other nutritious foods. According to CSPI executive director Michael F. Jacobson, "The kinds of food promoted on children's television promote tooth decay, obesity, and heart disease .... It is shameful that despite years of controversy, broadcasters, the food industry, and government have failed to develop any kind of meaningful nutrition-education campaign for children." |
