As she returned home to Illinois, Sue A. Pike Sanders bid farewell to the scents and tastes that became familiar during her stay in Southern California. As her view of the enchanting shore began to fade, Sanders reflected on the calming atmosphere she knew was like no other. We stand on the back end of the train and sigh a fond farewell to Los Angeles, its lovely homes and orange grove, its tropical fruits and trees, its ever fragrant blossoms, its mild and beautiful climate, its mountain shadows and ocean breezes, withal a happy place where December's cold and summer's heat combine to form a mild retreat for the invalid from all climes. Here the weary forget hardships and life becomes a continual May profuse with ever-blooming roses.Sanders' memoir, A Journey To, On and From the "Golden Shore," includes thoughtful descriptions of the tranquil glory she first discovered in Southern California, as well as daily logs from Oakland, San Jose, Napa Valley, and Yosemite. –Contributed by Allia Homayoun. |
