Mary Bowden Carroll came to San Jose from New York in 1892. Ten years in Paradise offers readers a sunny perspective on the Santa Clara Valley, including observations of the good relations between rival colleges. University of the Pacific, a Methodist college, the Rev. Father Accolti, S. J., of Santa Clara College, a Catholic institution of learning, occupied a seat on the platform; and on the occasion of the exercises in honor of Washington's Birthday in 1903, at the same university, Rev. Father Kenna, S. J., President of Santa Clara College, was the principal speaker. The people, by associating with men and women of other nationalities and beliefs, have learned, and are generous enough to admit, that virtue and honesty are a common heritage, and that, perhaps, it is God's design to allow a diversity of races and religions to teach men to cultivate charity and to appreciate good qualities wherever they may be found.Carroll's 1903 book offers advice on business and social life in the valley, just the sort of reading to awaken the interest of the potential emigrant.
